Hi guys. How are you?
You have two activities this week.
The first one is to try to correct the sentences below. I have selected some mistakes that you made in your last activity. The reason I chose these mistakes is not to make a big deal of it, but since most of you were making the same mistakes, I thought it would be a good idea to think about them.
You have 7 sentences, try to find the mistake and correct it. The number next to the sentence indicates the number of mistakes in that phrase. If you can, try to explain why it was incorrect before. I also would like to ask you to write a sentence that you were in doubt when you were doing your homework. Or a sentence that I highlighted and you didn’t know how to correct. Is that ok?
Activity 1
a) Is difficult to choose the most important discovery in the physics, because they are all so relevant. (2)
b) The Newton’s Laws of Motion were very important to the development of…. (1)
c) The video presents two relevant discoveries. One of then refers to… (1)
d) These discoveries represents the foundation of science and… (1)
e) Albert Einstein, which is the most important scientist of all times, suggested that… (1)
f) The decision of present scientific discoveries was… (1)
g) There are another relevant discoveries in science that… (1)
Activity 2
Since we have been talking about discoveries, it would be a good idea for you to show an interesting discovery in your field of study. Try to find a video about an important discovery in your area. Post the link to the video on our blog and record a comment briefly explaining why this discovery is important. If you prefer, you can post the link of a movie that presents some kind of discovery and you can comment about that. You can also talk about a sitcom. You may choose what you think is more appropriate or more interesting for you, ok?
These activities are due: November 14th, 8 a.m.
If you have any doubts, please, write me.
Have a nice week!
Claudia
Activity 1
ResponderExcluira)It is difficult to choose the most important discovery in Physics, because they are all so relevant.
The first mistake is about the absence of a subject and the second is that Physics is a field of study, so it should be used with capital letter and without “the”.
b)The Newton’s Law of Motion was very important to the development of…
The problem was the verb form, while the subject was in the singular, the verb was in the plural.
c)The video presents two relevant discoveries. One of them refers to…
The mistake was probably a miss taping; the letter “m” was replaced by “n”.
d)These discoveries represent the foundation of science and…
The problem was the verb concordance: the subject was in plural form and the verb was in singular form.
e)Albert Einstein, which is the most important scientist of all time, suggested that…
There isn’t a plural for the word "time" when it is used with the meaning of a period of time.
f)The decision of presenting scientific discoveries was…
The verb that follows the preposition “of” should be in “ing” form.
g)There are other relevant discoveries in science that…
Since the word “discoveries” is in plural form, “another” can’t be used because it is in singular form.

The other part I'll send by e-mail.
a) Is difficult to choose the most important discovery in the physics, because they are all so relevant. (2)
ResponderExcluirIt is missing the subject, which is not permitted in English. Furthermore, Physics (with capital letter) is not preceeded by "the". The corrected sentence is:
It is difficult to choose the most important discovery in Physics, because they are all so relevant.
b) The Newton’s Laws of Motion were very important to the development of…. (1)
It was not supposed to have "The" before Newton's. The corrected sentence is:
Newton's Laws of Motion were very important to the development of…
c) The video presents two relevant discoveries. One of then refers to… (1)
"Then" is the same as so, therefore... The right way of writing is:
The video presents two relevant discoveries. One of them refers to…
d) These discoveries represents the foundation of science and… (1)
"These discoveries" refers to more than 1 discovery, so the right way of writing is:
These discoveries represent the foundation of science and…
e) Albert Einstein, which is the most important scientist of all times, suggested that… (1)
The problem is with the word "which", that is used just for things, not for people. So, the right way of writing is:
Albert Einstein, who is the most important scientist of all times, suggested that… (1)
f) The decision of present scientific discoveries was… (1)
Always use the verb in gerund form after the preposition "of". Then:
The decision of presenting scientific discoveries was… (1)
g) There are another relevant discoveries in science that… (1)
Another is singular and discoveries is plural. In this case, another has to be replaced by "other":
There are other relevant discoveries in science that… (1)

Activity 1
ResponderExcluira) It's difficult to choose the most important discovery in Physics, because they are all so relevant.
1- All sentence must have a subjected, even an impersonal one.
2- We must use capital letter and no articles in "Physics", that is an subject or field of study.
b) The Newton’s Laws of Motion was very important to the development of….
1- Although "Laws of Motion" may seem a plural subject, the use of the article "the" before this implies on agreement with the plural form of the following verb.
c) The video presents two relevant discoveries. One of them refers to…
1- "Them" (thepronoum) is written with 'm'.
d) These discoveries represent the foundation of science and… (1)
1- The verb "represent" agrees "discoveries", that is in plural.
e) Albert Einstein, which is the most important scientist of all time, suggested that…
1- There isn't a plural form for the word "time" in this meanig of a period or age.
f) The decision of presenting scientific discoveries was…
1- Before the "of" preposition, we may use the "ing" form to show the infinitive.
g) There are other relevant discoveries in science that…
1- Since we're not comparing just two discoveries, we use "other", that agrees with plural substantives.
