Online Activities – 2nd week
Dear students,
Here are the instructions for your online activities. Remember that you have to post your answers until September 5th , 8 a.m.
Since you have been studying about academic biographies, we will discuss a little bit more about this topic and you will have the chance to practice.
First, I would like to ask you to watch two videos we have selected. After watching the videos, try to review what you have studied about academic biographies during your classes and answer the following questions. If you prefer, you can write only one answer for the all the questions. Remember that you will post it as a comment. You can also comment on your friend’s comment if you want.
Video links:
ACTIVITY 1
a) Try to compare the videos and the explanations / discussions you had in your classes.
b) What is the most important information presented in each video? Justify your answer.
c) Which video was more useful to help you write an academic biography? Why?
d) Based on the videos and the classes you had, what kind of information should be in your academic biography?
ACTIVITY 2
Let’s practice? In a new post, try to write your own academic biography. If you have any questions or doubts, please, contact your online teacher at claudiakawachi@gmail.com
Thank you!
Have a nice week,
Claudia

ResponderExcluirThe videos present different points of view about how to write a Professional Biography. The first one presents a more detailed description of the steps that have to be performed, such as the organization of the text (resume, professional accomplishments and awards), analysis (narrow down accomplishments, including only the strongest points), brainstorm (creativity, bring the pearson to life for the reader), structure of paragraphs (introductory and three short ones), editing and rewriting if necessary.
ResponderExcluirThe second one, on the other hand, has a not detailed description. It gives some information about the importance of knowing who are you writing for, of being concise and honest and of keeping the text non-personal.
Comparing all the information given by the videos and the descriptions about three Professors from Michigan University, it's possible to see that all the texts have a short resume in the beginning, have details about the professional accomplishments, are concise and honest and are written in the third pearson (non-personal). But what make them different from the recommendations of both of the videos is that they don't have details about the Professors' life, don't have exactly three short paragraphs below the introduction and definitely don't have humor.
In my opinion, the videos are complementary, but the first one gives more useful information about how to write an Academic Biography.
We discussed in class that the descriptions we read about three Professors from Michigan University don't have information about where did the Professors study or which degrees they had, because the texts are in the Michigan University website, and these kind of information is not important for the University (actually, it can create an undesirable rivalry).
In my Academic Biography, it's important to write the degrees I have, my professional accomplishments (with what I work in my undergraduate research) including only the strongest points, to be concise and honest and to be non-personal.
Juliana Quintanilha Martins is a non-graduate student of Physical and Biomolecular Sciencies at the University of São Paulo. She works in an undergraduate research project with the protein Selenophosphate Synthetase from Naegleria gruberi, which participates of the Selenocysteine biosynthesis pathway. Her recent work includes cloning the sequence related to both of the protein conserved domains in cloning vector and inducing the heterologue expression in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). The research also includes the structural characterization of the protein, such as its molecular mass and hydrodynamic radius.
ResponderExcluir1.a) The Mahalo video doesn't talk specifically about a academic bio, but it contains some tips, patterns and steps for doing it. The second video didn´t give the hole structure of a bio and it´isnt specific as well, but that gives examples. The discussion on class are just for academic purpose and it has used a lot of examples.
ResponderExcluir1.b) The best point of Maholo is the pattern and the schema that video shows, I really liked because their organization helps the learning. The Laura video focused on details such as on the person that will read the bio.
1.c) My vote is for the Maholo one, because its is simple and I liked the process of creating a bio the video shows.
1.d) I would write about my graduation, about the things that I know how to do, about the things that i do best. Most the abilities that I have because I don't did much things already.
2)In 2005 I completed my high school and a technician course in electronics at ETE Getulio Vargas. I am under graduation on Universidade de São Paulo since 2007, in the second year that the course of Computational Physics exist. I worked with Professor Luis Vitor on a Computer Cluster that is working for cosmological analysis of a shower phenomenon on cosmic rays. I have a good ability programing and a good knowledge of computational systems.
1.a) In class, we have discussed a lot about academic biographies by reading the examples given in the book. We talked about its grammatical structures such as verbs tenses and the use of third person. We also said that the texts we read were very objective and impersonal, they only told us about the persons’ formation and what they were developing in science right now. However, in the videos we are able to see this kind of text in a new perspective. In Mahalo’s video we find a helpful guide that teaches us how to write academic biographies. It gives us tips of what ideas and information we are recommended to put in the text and even how can we structure it. And surprisingly, the video advise us to be creative and even to add humor in our biography. The second video is completely different in this point; it says that we shall be concise and non personal. Also, the information is less precise than it is in the first video. It gives us general tips such as, think about the public you are writing for and be honest.
ResponderExcluirb)The most important information presented on the first video is the structure we should follow to write an academic biography: introduction paragraph and three short paragraphs and what kind of information we should put into them. This is very helpful because sometimes we have doubts about structure when we start writing. In the second video the most important information is the advice of being honest and concise, which are central aspects of a good biography.
c)In my opinion the best video is the first one because its more precise and it is a complete guide to write an academic biography, which includes the ideas and structure recommended to this kind of text.
d) In my academic biography, there should be my previous nicest experiences in the academic/professional world, my strongest points and also what I’m studying and developing right now. All this written in an honest, concise and non-robotic way.
2. Monique Gasparoto has finished high school at Military School in 2008. She also received her Michigan English Certificate in 2008. She is an undergraduate student of Physics and Biomolecular Sciences at USP who works at the Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicity Laboratory. In 2011 she made a 2 month stage at Université Paris Sud 11. Nowadays, she develops biosensors with application in medicine.
Lídia Tomoko Sawakuchi is an undergraduate student of Computational Physics at University of São Paulo. She works in an undergraduate research in High Energy Physics, with a focus in High Energy Cosmics Rays, trying to explain their origin and acceleration mechanisms, which include acceleration in homogeneous magnetic fields (Betatron Acceleration), and acceleration due to interactions with moving magnetic-inhomogeneities in magnetic clouds (Fermi Mechanism).

ResponderExcluirIn the firdt video, they dont separate from whom you will be writing to,but at least she gives the most important topics that you must write down in your bio. In the second video, she gives us examples of academic bios.
ResponderExcluirb) In mahalo video, we have a more concise introduction, with separation of topics, so the most important info is that organized scheme she "teaches". In the second video, the most important info is the examples she show us.
c)The first one, because im a disosganized boy and i need organized ideas.
d)My name, My academic past, the most important point on my career, in what im graduate.
- João Victor de S. Cunha is an undergradute student in Physical and Biomolecular Sciences in University of São Paulo. He work in an undegraduate reasearch in Protein Structure, focusing on the Septin Complex. He is developing a work trying to coexpress their full estructure.
The first video discusses about the structure of a Professional Biography in a very rigorous way. It describes the mainly characteristics of this genre and tells about a series of steps you have to follow
ResponderExcluirto write a good bio. The second video makes an approach completely different, because it highlights
the context in which the bio will be published. As we discussed in the classes, it is a really important thing to pay attention about for whom we are writing. By example, we saw three Professional Biographies about professors from Michigan University (which were published in the Michigan's University website) and two Professional Biographies about professors from our Institute (which were from their Lattes curriculum), and we could see that they brought appropriated informations for each case.
The most important thing in the first video is, clearly, the emphasys in the procedure you have to follow to write a bio and structure. In the second video, the mainly idea is keep in mind the context
in which you will publish your bio.
This way, I think the second video brings informations more relevant about Professional Biographies, because the details about the structure can change according to the context.
My academic biography must brings informations about my degrees, accomplishments and awards.
