Hi guys. How are you doing?
You are going to watch a video about some of the greatest discoveries in physics. It is part of a series of seven videos that portray the most important scientific discoveries. I will ask you to watch to the first for this activity. If you find them interesting, you can watch the other ones.
The link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK_bNsrq4I8
Your task is to compare the discoveries presented in this first video to the ones from the exercise you did in class (top 10 discoveries, page 1 – exercise C).
After writing some comments about the top ten discoveries and the ones presented in the video, choose the most important discovery. Write one or paragraphs arguing why you chose that discovery and why you think it is the most important one.
Post your comment until Monday, October 31st, 8a.m. (HalloweenJ)
If you have any questions or doubts, write me.
Have a great week,
Claudia

ResponderExcluirAccording to the video, the most important discovery is(are?) the Laws of Motion, made by Isaac Newton. It agrees in part with the Top Ten Physics Discoveries we have seen in class, in which the most important discovery is the Law of Falling Bodies, also made by Isaac Newton. The video also quotes this law, which, actually, contributed to the discovery of the Laws of Motion. In my opinion, both one are essential for the understanding of the nature and of almost everything related to movement. There are another great important discoveries too, like the Electromagnetism, which explains the relation between electricity and magnetism, and the second law of thermodynamics, which gives us the idea of time and reversibility of processes. But, for me, the discovery that is most presented in our daily life, since when we walk or when we stumble and fall, or also when we try to kick the wall and feel pain, is the Newton's laws of motion, because it is all explained by them. Therefore, I agree with both the video and the Top Ten of the material.
ResponderExcluirThe discussion we have made in class and the video from you tube, both presented top discoveries in science. In the first case, we have discussed the top ten discoveries in Physics while in the video the discoveries presented are from science in general, including even biological issues. In class, the top ten discoveries listed were, according to their importance: The Law of falling bodies, Universal Gravitation, The laws of motion, The second law of thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Special Relativity, E = mc², The quantum leap, The nature of light and The Neutron. In the video, two discoveries are showed, The laws of motion and Microorganisms, which are the tenth and ninth respectively. The agreement of both rankings in choosing the laws of motion might be due to the fact that the discovery of Isaac Newton describes de movements of all physical objects and is the foundation of Classical Mechanics.
ResponderExcluirIn my point of view, the most important discovery was the second law of thermodynamics that describes the existence of a physical principle called entropy. The second law establishes that the entropy of an isolated system and consequently of the universe never decreases. Therefore it explains the phenomenon of irreversibility in nature, indicating the tendency of a process to happen in a particular direction. For example, it justifies why energy flows spontaneously from regions with higher temperatures to regions of lower temperature. In other words, it gives the direction for nature and life.
The video shows us two of the Top Ten Greatest Discoveries on Sciences. One of then, the Newton's Laws of Motion, is quite important on the Physics world because, just as said in the video, is the basis for what we call today Classical Mechanics. These Laws can explain the movement of all macroscopic objects in the Universe while correlate the acting forces to the start of movement.
ResponderExcluirIn class, we ranked this discovery like one of the most important in the range of the Physic's ones, due to this explained importance.

ResponderExcluirIn the video they show the Newton's laws of motion as the 10th most important discoveries of all time, but i disagree with them. The Laws of motion was a breakthrough in how the earth and the galaxy works. It was the first time that the man could explain carefully how the things far greater than ourselves works so perfectly, and with cirurgical precision. In our exercise, the laws of motion were at third place, because of their role in classical machanics and how the physics need to be done.
